How to avoid being creative
There is so many books on and vigorous discussion around how to be creative – you need to do this, that or the other. I am a massive fan of ways to be more creative but as with idea or problem, its good to look at in another way.
Creativity is as much about what you already do (habits and behaviors that hinder creativity) as what you need to do. I received a post from Creative Something that gave a great list of ways to avoid being creative. I have posted it here exactly as they posted it. Check out their blog.
How to avoid being creative.
# Follow a routine every day, all the time, with everything you do.
# Stick to what you already know.
# Assume that your way of thinking is always right.
# Only pretend to listen to other people’s ideas.
# Believe that creativity cannot be learned.
# Play it safe, avoid risks.
# Ensure that you are never wrong.
# Always think logically.
# Critique while creating, not after.
# Constantly copy other people’s ideas.
# Believe that creativity is work, not fun.
# Spend an irrational amount of time thinking about an idea before acting on it.
# Never write down your ideas.
# Do what has been proven to work, always.
# Listen to the same genre of music and read the same types of books.
# Pretend not to care about anything.
# Remind yourself daily that you are not creative.
# Never seek out creative inspiration.
# Forget about observing the world around you.
I have never heard a company say they don’t value innovation. Innovation doesn’t exist without creativity – creative behaviors, creative actions and creative thinking. And creativity feels good!
