ART TEAM BUILDING – ANZBCTG Blasting cannons, paradigms and creating great art. Recently I had the pleasure of hosting an Art Team Building and Masterpiece workshop with an exceptional group of people. The Australian and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trails Group. mu legend zen online A team of men and women who each day dedicate their time to finding a cure for breast cancer. spyderco slysz bowie An honourable group and there I was standing before them with the job of making them incredibly uncomfortable… (and then very happy). I was facilitating as part of a larger conference they were attending in the iconic Fort Scratchley Historic Site on the head land of Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle. A beautiful location with 360 degree ocean views. They even offered their guest an option of firing an old cannon at lunch. How’s that for a mid day wake up! The had a great morning with Lincoln Amidy from Pinnacle Team Events to which they spoke very highly of. In this session they completed some disc profiling, which revealed that the vast majority of their strengths sat in the lower left hand quadrant of the brain (no surprises there, being a group of researchers and scientists). What I was about to do with them in the afternoon was catapult them into the top right quadrant. When I first addressed the group stating that we were going on a creative journey it was as if a little part of each of them died. An implosion of sorts. All good though as what progressed was a brilliant afternoon of transformation. Teams stood up revealing their works of art to the “Wows!” and the “I can’t believe that!” of their peers. A big thank you to everyone at the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group. nobis women’s tula It was an absolute joy to share the experience with...

How much do you really value your company values? Are you passionate about them? What do your peers know about them? They are questions that I pondered when I had the pleasure of being involved in an amazing values launch recently. adidas stan smith It really made me sit up and think about what values mean and the effort that should go into them – if you really value them. More importantly, the messages that you send if you don’t put in the effort. parajumpers gobi To read more click VisualFunk to...

THE NUMBER 1 THREAT TO YOUR POTENTIAL   In most situations progress and success are achieved by breaking through our comfort zones… This little critter is the reason why it’s so dam hard!” Of all the art inspired workshops and team building events we run by far my favourite is our Team Masterpiece event. It’s because of the profound shift and transformation that occurs in our participants. I get to watch the moment when someone’s mind pivots from a state of “I can’t do that!” to, “Wow, I did, and can’t believe it!”. Now within the workshop we use art to create this shift but the workshop is not necessarily about art. What do is illustrate that much of that which we believe we are incapable of, is actually very much within our reach… We simply use art as a means to get there. The reason I believe that this shift takes place so often in Art Masterpiece is that it’s an intense, at times uncomfortable creative journey. A journey that many of us have not been on since we where a child. I’ve written about this in one of my past entries, “The number one reason why your not creative!” (Yes, I do like to use a “Number one… “ title). Now before we guide participants too far down a line of progressively more and more challenging art activities, we illustrate a warning and that is…. BEWARE OF THE OGRE As we say in Team Masterpiece we all have an ogre! It’s a voice which talks to us, constantly in the background. A voice sometimes as silent as a whisper and other times as loud as thunder.  The ogre is that voice which talks to us whenever we go to do something out of our comfort zones. To do something challenging, something we believe we are not instinctively good at. It’s the voice that says, “Don’t you remember your no good at this!”,  “It’s not going to work out well!”, “I think your forgetting… You can’t draw!” We all have a version of this ogre. For me it pipes up when I e-mail or write something like this blog entry, because as long as I can remember I was told “Writing just isn’t your strong suit!”. This belief re-enforced by my peers in high school (all in bottom english) and now by my wife, who is so dam good at it (A High School english teacher… How’s that!). When I write my Ogre say’s, “You’re going to look like a dumb arse!” “You don’t even know which where to use where ???” …. “Maybe you should just do a...

ART HEIST – An Amazing Race Team Building event with a difference A perfect day running around The Rocks with a great client. Earlier this month I had the fortune (and fun) to facilitate our Art Heist team building event with AMR throughout The Rocks Sydney. Art Heist is an Adventure Race style of event with a heavy artistic spin. Participants were informed that a series of art works by an internationally renowned artists has gone missing from one of Australia’s leading Art Galleries and their task was to ensure the exhibition will take place. They then had to navigate through The Rocks whilst carrying out a series of challenges. They re-created art works via drawing, sculpting, snapping photo’s, filming short skits and seeking advice from a number of wandering artists (professional actors) found along their journey. Here are a few of our top shots captured by the team members. Challenges included; “Take a photo of your sculpture in a situation or location they shouldn’t be in?” “Shoot a photo of your team participating in the latest fitness craze Hip Hop Yoga!”, “Design a Where’s Wally photo with all of your team members present and Inspired by the many stairs used by local office workers banging out a quick lunch time work out capture a photo entailed “Lazy Bastard!” We lucked out on the weather (beautiful, sunny about 22 degrees) and had a location to work with that would be hard to beat… Thanks AMR. It was a brilliant day and I must say your Where’s Wally photo’s where top notch!   Brad Visual Funk Lead Facilitator E: brad@visualfunk.com.au   Art Adventure Race Art Adventure outing Outdoor Adventure Heist AMR HipHop Yoga AMR ART HEIST Art Heist AMR...

THE SECRET TO UNLOCKING YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL        – Is far easier than you think! Last week I facilitated an Art Masterpiece team building workshops with a high profile client in Melbourne. Opening the event I asked the participants the dreaded question, “Who here considers themselves to be creative?” To which I heard nothing but crickets. Now this response wouldn’t normally surprise me however I considered this company to be operating in a particularly creative field. When I probed a little further I found that the majority of staff did not consider themselves to be creative for in their words, “they could not draw!” They held strong to this belief and we where about to partake in a 3 hour art workshop… yikes! We pressed along as I guided them through a series of activities where their skills scaffolded allowing each participant to stretch and strengthen their right brain and creative ability. 2 hours in and the very same staff members now proudly displayed amazing, expressive works of art and a creative confidence exuded from their being. Asked the same question again “Who here considers themselves to be creative?” and the answer was an resounding “I do!” Admittedly throughout this process there was quite bit of drawing involved and yeah the ability of the individuals mentioned was less than crash hot but big stinking deal! Drawing is simply the ability to make a mark on something, and is absolutely no indicator to one’s creative ability. Creativity is a frame of mind, a way of looking at the world not an measure of ones artistic talent.   We need to dispel this myth that “I can’t draw a life portrait so that means I’m not creative”, and accept the reality that just by being human you innately are!  Granted you may have closed that possibility a long, looooooong time ago but regardless, the fact is you are! Just take a look at a group of kindergarten students anywhere between the age of 4 and 6 every child of that age pours creativity, if your a parent you know the truth of this statement, and guess what… We where all children once. When we embrace this truth we give ourselves permission to think creatively, exercise innovation and intern drive opportunities for growth be it for our department, our organisation, our business or our personal lives. Creative is the key to future progress   Time and time again I see countless individuals flex their creative muscles and reconnect with their ability as I guide them through our Art Masterpiece Workshop. If you think your team may need some guidance to unlock their...

Last Friday was a beautiful day in Sydney. Not just because of the weather, which was impressive, but because we held our fantastic Amazing Grace’s Charity Race for a group of 100 from all around Australia in the confines of Cockle Bay. A great venue for the Amazing Race as it’s a circular course, it’s a great vibe and it’s a fun place to be. We had 10 teams of people who started off the day in Nick’s Bar & Grill right on the waterfront. The teams were given a pack containing their first clue. Then it was on! They spent the next couple of hours exploring Cockle Bay and Darling Harbour, trying to find clues to reveal the location of Amazing Grace, a leading philanthropist who had recently disappeared. Along the way they bumped into some very colourful characters who had the teams roaring with laughter at the activities they were asked to do! Clowns, Magicians, Heroes from Ancient Greece, Street Artists. We like to keep our team building creative! The race finished back at Nick’s Bar & Grill, where teams were asked to create a sculpture out of objects they had collected during the race – these sculptures were superb – creative, funny and some very topical. We then played back some of their antics during the day on the big screen and announced the winner. A great way to finish the day and lead into a yummy dinner and drinks. See below for some of the stuff they got up...
